SEO’s Leave Their Top SEO Tip For 2020

I asked over 200 different SEO’s for their top SEO tip for 2020 – here’s what they told me.

Note: I will include all of these tips in my free Ultimate SEO Pro Checklist.

Entities. Do what you have to so that you fully understand Entities in SEO, then apply that to everything you do. This is the future of marketing, it’s the future of search, it’s everything. All you have to do is look at the BERT update to see this (if you hadn’t already been picking up the signals Google has been sending for the last 4 or 5 years). Links, technical on-page, everything else is going to take a back seat to the semantic web, because it’s Google’s next step in attaching definition to…well, entities. “Things, not strings” is here to stay.

Kyle Bailey – Frontburner Marketing

If your site has been around for years, some of those old blog posts could be doing more harm than good for your site. Do an audit of the blog posts on your site and find out which ones have become outdated and/or no longer receive traffic organically. Decide to either 301 them to newer and better content, delete, or update them.

You want your website to provide fresh, relevant, and high-quality content relevant to your niche. Don’t spread your content too thin if your website is still in the stages of building authority. Recently a client’s site had over 100 irrelevant, outdated blog posts. We decided to delete most of them and when we did, the authority of the website nearly tripled and organic traffic went up 4x over the course of a few months.

Roy Goldstein – Serpstorm

Google is increasingly becoming about real-world “things”. Keep your entity data relevant by topically overwhelming your niche on every platform – YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and relevant blogs and sites; and be a force (through your own blogging and outreach) in entity-based queries.

Horia Neagu – Napoleon.Digita

Use the website that Google My Business offers for free! It’s like another account and you get some extra visits (that can lead into customers) to that profile that you wouldn’t get otherwise.

Emanuel Petrescu – EmanuelP

Take advantage of your Google My Business page. It is directly connected to Google and will give you the opportunity to post content, including deals and updates while optimizing your website.

Heather Hardy – 313Marketing.Com

Always try to learn new things and accept new challenges. I personally avoided e-commerce websites for SEO but for 2020, I accepted a few. Follow influencers and make sure that you’re spending time learning from people who have successfully grown their SEO agencies.

Angeline Licerio – ANT Digital

Refresh old content that used to perform well and has declined. Add in some paragraphs with relevant keywords that rank in positions 3-10ish and make sure your main keyword is in your title.

Megan Mahoney – Ignite My Site

Never forget the goal to serve a customer and give outstanding service, whilst you can optimize a site to be found easily the message needs to congruent throughout the organization. Once you’ve reached the end-user make sure their experience over-delivers their expectations and you’re on the route to a repeat customer and referral source. With social feedback, a brand message can be destroyed in moments with negative social or SERPS.

Create something unique – a term that people will search for as they were curious. Optimize through usual keyword route but post through social and relevant networks.

Sarah Lock – MNR Sportscars

Create high-quality backlinks for your website or blog and try to boost your domain and page authority. If you have authority then you can beat any website or blog easily in search engines. Because less authority loses the rank after any Google update and higher domain authority easily gets featured snippets. Try to boost your authority and get ranking and traffic easily.

VISAL TYAGI – Blogging Giant

Know the difference between website service landing pages and blog posts. Landing pages are for selling. Blog posts are for educating. In order to win the game, you must have a happy balance of both.

Educating establishes you as an industry authority. Regardless of whether your target is B2B or B2C… everyone trusts in, and trusts with their business, the industry authority. If you simply sell, sell, sell… this is a fast track to the audience “tune out.” Follow a 4:1 education to selling ratio. Educate, educate, educate, and then sell.

Thomas Frood – ForensisGroup, Inc.

My personal recommendation for new SEOs is to master Schema.Schema is often ignored. Schema has a lot of benefits. It could give your website a CTR boost and a Ranking boost.

Aleem Iqbal – protechreviewer.com

Optimize your metadata for click-through rate rather than stuffing them full of keywords, this doesn’t work and hasn’t done for nearly 10 years. Be creative and write a powerful, engaging call to action to set yourself apart from competitors in the SERPs.

Download your query data from Google Search Console and start working on the pages with the lowest CTR first. Look at competitor’s titles/descriptions and try to make yours punchier and more exciting, then track the results!

Ben Major – NebDesign

My favorite and best SEO Tip for not only 2020 it is my EVERGREEN SEO TIP. Work on increasing the crawling and indexing of your content. Nowadays websites are facing difficulty in indexing the content. The majority of bloggers always submit their fresh content in their Google search console to index the content, which is not a good practice. Content should be indexed naturally without any extra efforts to be indexed in Google. When Google crawlers crawl and index your content seamlessly then it is the best thing for your website SEO. I will strongly recommend to every reader who is reading my SEO TIP, work on your crawling and indexing part. Google loves those sites which are very easy to crawl and giving fresh content like food for spiders.

Sourabh Rana – SEO Rana

Take the time to build really great assets on your site. One of the easiest ways to build backlinks without building backlinks is by creating a really great tool, guide, etc on your site. I’d highly recommend paying a developer to build a really awesome interactive tool on your site that solves someone’s problems. If you can create a unique, stylish tool that people really want to use, then the backlinks will pour in (after a little promotion, of course!).

Joseph Goodman – Joe SEO

If you’re a small business, your site has a low DR or you’re just starting out, create great content for very specific keywords, publish regularly (but the frequency may differ from), and be patient. (Great content is a prerequisite anyway.) It might take 12 months for Google to recognize and appreciate your take but it’s cumulative and if the recognition is good enough (it has taken better than anything already on offer) then you’re more likely to be recognized for E-A-T.

Robin Eyre – Trailblazer360 Marketing

My top SEO tip for 2020 like optimize your website and content for featured snippets. This helps optimize your brand as an authority in your industry while also increasing your visibility in the search engine results page. We have seen that Google is closely integrating featured snippets with their Google Assistant voice search so by optimizing for featured snippets you are also optimizing for voice search at the same time. This is increasingly important in 2020 as there is only one top spot with voice and it will become more competitive soon. In the future, we can expect search volume by voice to continue to increase and b, become more important.

Johnny Baskin – Toronto SEO Expert

It’s become a continuum from previous years. It’s a long history of SEObecomentent is still a king’

Write long engaging content. Long content ranks better. Is it necessarily better for the user? Hmmm.. not in every industry. Some users don’t particularly want to spend time reading and digging the answers through a long piece of content. So use your design and CTA psychology to make your long content more engaging and place your CTAs strategically. One trick I’ve seen is to use javascript loading effects and read more buttons. The content is hidden (but exists on-page and it’s crawlable). If the user presses the read more button it loads heaps more of content for those who want to read. It doesn’t refresh the page or send users to another page – that way you still have your long content but it’s far better to experience for the users and less distracting for those ready to convert.

Dessy Angelova – Seo Dot

Develop your content strategy to create new relationships from top of funnel visitors, particularly if you’re in the B2B or SAAS space.

Vahe Arabian – www.stateofdigitalpublishing.com

Stop trying to optimize for the search engines, and start optimizing for the user. Social engagement and social signals are gonna be the next backlinks.

Jim Ng – Best SEO Marketing Pte Ltd

I find that technical SEO brings a website a long way in terms of rankings and the amount spent on links. It should be the first thing any SEO should focus on, followed by mimicking what the competition is doing for their on-page and off-page SEO.

Conduct a thorough audit and fix all your technical issues first. Find low competition keywords and look at what the top 10 results are doing. Replicate your findings and improve to make sure your on-page SEO is better than everyone else’s. With this, if you did your keyword research and on-page SEO well, it’s usually enough to rank for non-competitive keywords.

If it’s not enough, use Ahrefs and find what backlinks and anchor text ratio your competition is getting. Try to get similar quality backlinks and replicate with the anchor text ratio. You may opt for slightly more backlinks if your budget permits.

This technique has seen the most success for me.

Firdaus Syazwani – firdaussyazwani.com

Content is still a KING. Content affects everything in your whole SEO process. In order to win in the competition, you have to write a long, and high-quality content. When you say high-quality, it should be relevant and valuable.

Kathereen Licayan – kathlinvirtualassistant.com/

Everything begins with keyword research. Begin by using Ahrefs and analyze 3-5 competitor sites. See which keywords they are currently ranking for and steal the keywords with adequate search volume and low difficulty scores. Create a list of the keywords found and put them into a spreadsheet. Hire a writer on Iwriter to create approx 500 words for each keyword for its individual page. Internally link between pages using the keyword you want to rank for in the anchor phrase.

Aaron Traub – HVAC Marketing Engine

A proper site architecture will live longer in the SEO game. If you try to rank with zero backlinks, build silo architecture for your website.

For example: If you are trying to rank “On-page SEO techniques in 2020” with zero backlinks, create an SEO as your Pillar page and build quality links using Shotgun and Broken Link Building. Interlink your article with the pillar page and boom.

Sammy Belose – Sage Software

When choosing between acquiring links and building linkable assets – I recommend the later. Especially when the marketing budget is less than $1499/montlattery because I’ve done and it worked. True story: A client (with an 11 y/o domain and business has had 243+ average monthly traffic) came to me for help. After auditing, reconstructing and optimizing their site for 4 months, 3 months later, I got them t,o 7,654+ on average per month and daily leads around 15-25 jobs ( min $500/job) on average.

Rienzi Mosqueda – Rienzi SEO

Focus on local SEO. We have only just (in digital terms) started promoting the capabilities of what will roll out for localized searches. Google My Business is your starting point!

Rubenstein – Kadima Digital

There are many metrics SEOs spend time (and sometimes money) focusing on but the one that will matter more than ever in 2020 and beyond will be RELEVANCY. Make sure your content answers a specific query for a specific audience in the most in-depth and thorough manner possible. If you have the best (i.e most relevant) answer, you will rank regardless of what better metrics other sites have.

Christian Lee – 3hundrd.com/

Focus on internal linking in order to be able to pass on link juice among related content across your website. Doing this properly has many additional benefits such as making the crawling process more efficient which is also important for indexing your website and its’ content in Google.

Dimitar Margaritov – Quantum Blue Digital

Always use Authority, Relevance, and Trust to base all of your marketing decisions on. Also in Local Marketing, live by Proximity, Relevance, and Brand Prominence. So if you always remember the acronym P.A.R.T.-B you can not go wrong with your focus. In marketing Proximity Authority Relevance Trust and Brand Prominence must be in everything you do.

Michael Christopher Debuty – 1Giant

Watch ALL of Chase Reiner’s videos! ALL of it! Subscribe to him on all social media channels and interact with him all the time on Facebook. SEO doesn’t need to be hard, so if you really want to rank your website, get targeted traffic and most of all convert, follow Chase right now!

Floyd Buenavente – Seophilippines.ph

For client SEO, focus on communicating and relating. The thing that I’ve learned through COVID-19 is that the relationships I’ve formed in the past 5 years of owning my business have been the most important component to my business being able to thrive right now.

Andy Doucet – Elevated Web Solutions

Must fill up the Meta Title & description, one target Keyword in the page title and subheading and in the first paragraph, make few internal links and external link, just fill-up the Alt Tag of any pictures, it’s good to update your old content after publishing any post must resubmit the XML sitemap to Google Search console, try to get some outbound link, optimize website speed by compressing your pictures, must be mobile responsive and use https extension.

Rajratna – ElearnHubs

SEO is about momentum, so maintaining consistency is useful for businesses wanting to stay front of mind with customers — and even come out the other end stronger. Use this time to focus on high-value, long-term activities, including crafting more relevant content, implementing Schema markup, consolidating, and improving current content, as well as making useful tools for your audience.

Andrew Raso – Online Marketing Gurus

The most important thing I would emphasize right now is the fact that your SEO writers need to be true writers. Advances like Google BERT mean that the algorithm is even more discerning about proper, actionable content, versus pages specifically rigged to try and game the system. Every now and then, something may slip to the top of rankings that shouldn’t. However, this is rare, and that type of content rarely lasts long enough to get any meaningful traction.

Elijah Masek-Kelly – Powerful Outreach

#1 SEO tip for 2020 is content up-gradation. It has been a game-changer for me. If you’re blogging for at least 2 years, you surely will have a lot of blog posts that are quite outdated.

In that case, you need to head over to those blog posts and give them a fresh update. For me, upgrading old blog posts has a really good return for the dollar spent on content (KPI for blogging) than publishing new blog posts.

For this, you need to identify the content whose traffic has been declining slowly over a couple of months and even years (depending upon your niche’s content shelf life), and then identify what content to update for signaling freshness. Those updated posts should rank well again as they already have an excellent track record of ranking well. If you are interested I have an entire case study on Google freshness.

AKSHAY HALLUR – BloggingX

In 2020 your brand, domain authority, and content quality will be the sword your business dies on when it comes to search engine rankings. Unfortunately, the process of ranking at the top for high-value terms is become harder and taking longer. Smart competitors are researching these same topics and taking their own approach to this same information.

You have to acknowledge SEO is a five-year commitment to do it properly and legally. Taking this approach will help you avoid the pitfalls some brands take to shortcut the process. Read Google Webmaster Guidelines every quarter and ensure your brand is following every line. You want your SEO efforts to last forever, Google is the judge of whether you do. Good luck!

Michael Gargiulo – vpn.com

We’d be glad to share a tip about tracking SERP rankings (hope it’s also something you could use) as it’s our core business.

When you track your rankings (SERPs) to see if your SEO efforts are working, there are other ranks you can check on top of the “regular” organic ones. These include local rankings, Desktop vs. Mobile (different device options), and according to a user’s default UI language.

You can also track specific SERP elements like Local Pack (Snack Pack), Google Business map positions (Local Finder), Video Carousel positions, and more. These insights, coupled with the ability to view the top 100 results for your search keyword, will give you the best picture of how well you’re doing.

Brad – ProRankTracker

Since July 1, 2019, Google has transitioned to mobile-first indexing meaning that the search engine predominantly takes the mobile version of your content for indexing and ranking. Choosing a content management system (CMS) with mobile responsive website themes will ensure that your website loads quickly and your content seamlessly adjusts to fit a mobile screen.

Candace Bozek – morweb.org

Schema is more important than ever. With search engines becoming smarter at detecting the intent of the keywords and with the domination of voice-based searches from the likes of Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri – it is important you have Schema on your website. Schema is essential for staying relevant in 2020 and beyond. It helps Google (and voice assistants) understand your content better which in turn helps your articles to display rich results on the search pages, resulting in higher CTR (Click-Through-Rate).

Bhanu Ahluwalia – Rank Math

In 2020 it’s time we put aside vanity metrics that don’t impact the bottom line. No more ‘we’re ranking for this keyword that brings us tons of traffic’ but no conversions. My top tip for any SEO in 2020 is to run a complementary paid search campaign that focuses on terms that you’re looking to rank for organically, then using the paid keyword data to influence the organic keyword strategy; focusing on the terms that are actually driving conversions, not just traffic for the sake of traffic. It’s also a great way to identify new title tags and meta descriptions based on the best ad copy that works for the paid campaigns.”

Samuel Quincy Edwards – SEO.co

Content is the cornerstone of a solid SEO strategy. Content and SEO should really be looked at as being part of one overarching strategy. For example, link building is a significant factor in determining your site’s ranking. Great content that organically earns links from other sites and that people share on social media and other channels can really help boost your search position. Great content also keeps people on your site longer, thus boosting traffic and leading to improved stats like a lower bounce rate. These all signal to Google that you have a high-quality website. So, focus on great content and build your SEO strategy around that.

Anthony Gaenzle – anthonygaenzle.com

If you want your business to thrive in 2020 you need to focus on the foundation of your website. Some of the tasks to a solid foundation for your website include making sure there are no internal broken links, your site is easy to navigate, your meta descriptions are optimized, the proper use of the canonical tag and getting rid of any duplicate content. Only when you have a solid foundation should you start taking steps to increase your SEO efforts and rankings.

The next two tasks are the King or Queen of increasing your rankings and your exposure on Google and other major search engines. Content is King and Backlinks are Queen. Produce quality long-form content on a regular basis. Whether that is 1 post per month or 10. You need to keep your content production consistent and engaging to build your audience and rank for long-tail keywords.

You also need to continue to do outreach for new backlinks. Backlinks are kind of like a popularity contest in the eyes of search engines. A website with the best backlinks tends to rank higher.

Jeremy Redlinger – Concrete Internet Marketing

My SEO tips for 2020 are really simple.

(1) Keyword Research:

Keyword research should be the starting point (In 2020 and beyond) for any SEO campaign.

Once you are done with keyword research, select the low competitive keywords.

(2) Competition analysis:

Search with your target keywords in Google, and see what’s currently ranking.

I see a lot of SEO experts and bloggers DON’T perform competitor analysis.

And, it’s a BIG mistake.

Try to understand why they are ranking on Google? What’re their strong points, what’s their weaknesses.

Basically, you need to identify the content gaps (and your job is to fill those gaps in your content).

(3) Website audit:

This is MUST.

I highly recommend performing a website audit when starting with any SEO campaign.

A STRONG website will perform way better.

An audit report will reveal all the negative factors of your website that may be holding your site back.

(4) Link Building:

Google publicly confirmed that backlinks are one of their top ranking signals.

Your page needs quality (relevant and do-follow) backlinks to rank in Google.

Is it possible to rank without backlinks?

Yes, possible…

But, for high competition keywords (when authority websites are ranking) your page needs backlinks to survive.

RINTU BISWAS – Digital SEO Land

Focus on creating the best possible content that you *know* people are looking for (after conducting thorough keyword research). To stand out in a competitive market, you really have to understand what people are searching for and create an industry-leading resource on your website. Users sharing your content is the best possible form of link building, but it won’t happen unless you have really pushed the boat out with the content.

Joe Friedlein – Browser Media

Top SEO tip for 2020

Optimization of a website for Mobile Search

With the advent of the internet on mobile phones, almost 60 percent of people are having access to different websites through their phones. As a consequence of which it becomes really substantial for SEO professionals to optimize a website not only for desktop users but for mobile users also on priority base. So make sure that your website is having good page speed, reluctant content which is easy to read for mobile viewers, best user interface, minimum pop-ups, working URL, etc. You will be able to get good feedback by optimizing your website according to the mobile search.

Voice search optimization for website

Gone are the days when people used to type their searches on the search bar as nowadays they are mostly engaging through voice search. So the chances of your website ranking high on search engines will increase only when you will add keywords targeted for voice search. A lot of keyword research will be required for that purpose as you have to target on the intent of the user through practical keywords that can be used in voice search.

Optimization for Local SEO

When your business is placed locally and your targeted consumers are only in the local area then the importance of local SEO increases two folds for you. Listing your business on different business listing sites and the local search engines can enable you to get good results to rank high on search engines. You can mindfully use those keywords which are more oriented towards local targeted visitors to optimize your website.

Mohd. Atif – Blogge

My 2 tips for a successful SEO campaign in 2020 cover 2 important aspects – great technical SEO and great content. Make sure Google is able to properly understand the structure of your website and that you provide great UX to please your users. As a second important point – have great content, covered by a good strategy, structured and formatted, and in correspondence with the user intent. Try to answer as many questions as possible in your content and be as conversational as possible. Be the best answer to the questions of your users.

Nikola Minkov – Serpact

Our biggest SEO tip is reverse engineering your competition. Most beginners in SEO would immediately jump into link building, and content creation without analyzing competitors for that keyword. How are they ranking? Why is google rewarding this particular website? We believe that in SEO there’s no need to reinvent the wheel you just need to improve what your competitors are doing. Without reverse engineering your competition your basically just guessing if you will rank for a particular keyword.

Focus on a niche and identify long-tail keywords around which you should build long-form original content, useful, and up-to-date. Long-tail keywords express stronger intent and help to get more qualified traffic.

Paolo Margari – Oltre.Digital

Look for growing subdirectories of your competitors to identify new topics and features they’re building out. You can use a rank tracker tool to look for a keyword that recently improved rankings on your competitor’s sites. Then, see if you can find a pattern in the URL structure. If you found several keywords in the same subdirectory gaining positions, you might be on to something! Validate the assumption by punching the subdirectory into the rank tracking tool to see if it’s growing. Also, make sure to manually check if this is actually new by visiting the URL.

What do you do once you found a growing subdirectory? Build one yourself! This way, you keep competing, develop new areas of growth, and don’t allow your competitors to pass you.

Get a knowledge panel for your Brand SERP.

Why is this so very important? Because Google has shifted to entity-based algorithms. In order to perform in SEO in 2020 and beyond, it needs to understand your brand as an entity: which means it needs to be confident it has an accurate understanding of who you are, what you do, and how you fit into the wider scheme of things.

A knowledge panel on the right-hand side of your Brand SERP (what appears when a client or prospect googles your brand name) is the visual indication that Google has understood your brand as an entity: it means your brand is in the Knowledge Graph. In a world of entity-based algorithms, that means you are on solid ground for the rest of your SEO efforts.

If you don’t have a knowledge panel on your Brand SERP, you are driving your SEO efforts with the handbrake on.

Jason BARNARD – KALICUBE SAS

I will Focus on User Experience as Google mentioned many times in core updates to give the best experience to users on mobile that’s why the mobile-first indexing algorithm is there. Now Google warned the website owners that Google’s Core Web Vitals to Become Ranking Signals by Early next year. Core Web Vitals, introduced earlier this month, are a set of metrics related to speed, responsiveness, and visual stability.

Tip: Voice SEO

SEO has evolved from just being a Google Desktop search to a search on Siri, Cortana, Alexa, and other voice assistants.

The tip is simple, when writing content for SEO, do not forget about the voice searches.

Remember the voice searches are little different when compared to a regular search that is actually typed into a Search Engine.

Saqib Irfan – Website Department

Here I am going to share the three most important things which I personally observed on my sites.

  1. Google would increasingly start favoring sites that offer better user experience and user retention so keep tracking the user behavior of your website in Google analytics and webmaster tool. Find out the things where users stuck and leaving your site. Fix those issues by covering all possible information. it’s very necessary to improve your ranking in 2020.

  1. Use all kinds of a schema for your pages like how to, site links, events, recipe, products listing, and generally more focus on how to schema. these help a lot to improve your keyword ranking. Schema markup and structured data play a crucial role in helping your web page transmit that information to the crawlers and search engines quickly and more systematically.

  1. Voice search is growing day by day. So always try to optimize your site for voice search commands. You can secure organic search traffic going into 2020 and beyond.

While metrics and ranking signals may change over time, one thing never changes and that is that great content converts and ranks better. Especially when paired with a strong off-page SEO strategy. Make sure that you optimize your pages and content for conversion, its all well and good getting more traffic, but making more from the traffic you already have – is even better.

SEO is important to any kinds of websites, the top tips for me about SEO are as below:

  • Content building: constantly providing high-quality relevant content that is meaningful and useful to your readers is the priority.

  • A user-friendly and SEO friendly website: a website that is fast loading, responsive, easy to navigate, and trouble-free to the users is essential for successful SEO.

  • Conversion rate optimization: converting traffic into sales, income, and leads is the ultimate goal for all the websites. I saw many websites with good traffic and high ranking, but not quite promising business. A customer/user orientation website needs to incorporate design, content, functions, features, and systems to drive results, which is what we call conversions.

Li Du – First Site Solutions

Combine Search Intent With Visual Search

We know that visual search is growing and search intent is Google’s new “big” thing. Search intent is Google’s way of giving people the exact search results they want. We also know more people are conducting visual searches than ever before. This means you need to optimize your images with all of the trusted methods (descriptive file name, alt text, etc.) but you also need to optimize the pages the images are on. Your pages need to be authoritative, have fresh

content, and feature the image at the top of the page. This will help Google identify each image with the user’s search intent, just like keyword search intent, improving your visual search and overall search visibility, especially for eCommerce.

James – Matchbox

Make the most of mobile, and don’t forget E.A.T! The number of mobile searches will continue to increase, and with Google switching to mobile-first indexing for all websites in September of this year, mobile will be more important than ever.

Ensuring you’re considering E.A.T in your ongoing SEO strategy will also be key – focusing on search intent and sharing genuine expertise will certainly help!

Mat Moses – Herdl

Don’t try to do it yourself. Hire a professional to give you the insights you need to succeed this year. A few hours of someone who is passionate about SEO is immensely helpful and we’ve done the same.
