Today I share my top local SEO tips for 2018.
Quick qualifier: I currently have tons of businesses ranking locally with the techniques I’m about to share with you. These businesses are backed by videos that show how I achieved these rankings as well.

1. Streamline Your Review Generation
Here’s exactly how I generated over 140 reviews for one of my local businesses.
Note: in my opinion, reviews make up about 20-30% of the ranking factors for the map pack.
Step 1: Create a Facebook group around a subject in your niche.
Step 2: Start funneling people into said group (you can use a content upgrade for higher opt ins).
Step 3: Promote funnel with paid ads or free content.
Step 4: Reach out to all new members in group and ask for a Google review regarding the free content you gave them which led them to the group.
Step 5: Send Pleper link for auto 5 star review pop up.
Step 6: Make sure you respond to the review in GMB (supposedly you get a higher ranking benefit after responding).
2. Build Generic and Hyper Local Citations
A citation can be one or more of the following listed on another website:
- Business name
- Business address
- Business phone Number
Ideally you’d like to get all four. This is known as NAP or NAPW. (Name, address, phone number, website).

Generally, I try to shoot for 90+ citations for every local client.
3. Optimize your GMB (Google My Business)
Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Choose 1-3 categories you want to rank your business for (look at what competition is ranking for and choose similar categories).
Step 2: Get tons of images of your location, services, and team. Especially images of the location, even if it’s a home address or a service area.
Step 3: Change file url’s of images to match what the images are.
Step 4: If possible add keywords into your businesses GMB title (be careful, Google is cracking down on keyword stuffing).
Step 5: Setup Buffer cue and continually update your businesses G+ with relevant posts.
4. Get Your Site Architecture and Keyword Mapping Setup Correctly
It’s really important that you setup specific landing pages for the keywords you’re trying to rank locally for.
This means if you have a service, you should list it on your site.
A great example of someone who is doing this correctly is SBPC Tech.
You also want to make sure you’re not cannibalizing one pages keyword with another.
For instance, if your main keyword is “Computer Repair + city”, you want to make sure that you’re using your home page to target that keyword.
That being said, you will not have another page targeting that exact same keyword. The closest keyword being targeted to that keyword would be “computer repair services + City”.
5. Internal Link On Every Page
The best ways to pass value (Page Rank) to other pages is to make sure you’re internally linking to other relevant pages.
I usually do about 2-3 internal links per page. Remember the more links you have, the more you’re diluting the value of each link.
For local, I try to internally link on every page back to the home page with different variations of anchor text.
This internal anchor text could be some of the following, “Computer repair + city name, business brand name” or other closely related keywords that wouldn’t be targeted on any of the other pages on the site.
6. Add Location + Niche Specific Data To Each Page
As stated as my first tip in my white hat seo techniques article, I’ve actually been able to rank in places that are nowhere near me with this method.
The secret is to add hyper relevant data from other sources like Wikipedia, just make sure you’re not copying and pasting that content.
7. Setup Call Tracking / Offline Conversion Tracking
For many of you this may be basic knowledge. However, this is something I see time and time again not being implemented.

8. Add CTA’s (Call To Actions) Above The Fold To Main Pages
Generally when I work on a local site, I will check GA (Google Analytics) and see the top trafficked pages.
Afterwards, I will see which of these pages do not have CTA’s above the fold and add them accordingly.
Usually these CTA’s will point to a well made conversion funnel.
9. Build A Conversion Funnel With Upgrades
Here’s what you do:
Step 1: Choose what platform you want to build your funnel on (click funnels, instapage, unbounce, etc.).
Step 2: Setup funnel to promote not only what you’re selling locally but build in upgrades and OTO’s (one time offers).
Step 3: Setup an auto responder to thank them for purchasing or signing up and promote any of your other products in said email.
10. Focus On Topical Seeding
It’s important to seed your main keywords or variations of keywords across pages throughout your site.
This helps bring more relevance to the entire site (and individual pages) from internal linking, title tags, h tags, and other on page elements.
A good example of this is, if you are targeting a city, you’d generally want to add that city in every page of the site throughout the most important on page elements.
11. Create Related City and Service Pages
This strategy is often overlooked with most local sites I audit.
If you have a site targeting a major city, you should create pages that city’s in the surrounding area, so that you can rank for those city’s.
Also, if you have service pages, make sure you list all services you provide with the URL path similar to domain/services/name-of-service
12. Utilize Schema Markup For Main Pages
It’s important to markup the following pages for local:
- Home (local business markup)
- About (about markup)
- Contact (contact markup)
- Services (product markup, with reviews if you can. Just make sure you add those reviews to the page as well).
- Blog (blog post markup)

13. Competitive Back Link Building
A great way to start getting back links locally is to steal them from your competitors.
All you have to do is Google a search term you’re trying to rank for, see who shows up, copy their url and plug them into a backlink checker.
From that point, try to find links that are specific to your target city and go for those.
Hyper local links are generally the best when sniping links.
14. Get Setup on Bing and Yahoo Local
Something I see a lot of people overlook is getting a local listing on Bing and Yahoo local.
This only take a few minutes to do, but will end up helping you rank higher in Google and maybe even grab some traffic off these less popular search engines.
15. Start Embedding Relevant Youtube Videos For On Page
Something I try to do for my main pages is embed relevant Youtube videos with similar keywords to the page I’m trying to rank.
I even streamline the process by buying an animation video off Fiverr.
I also find that having videos on pages reduces bounce rates, and usually up’s conversion rates.

16. Show Case Testimonials On Highest Value Pages
I’ve found that by using testimonials on my highest trafficked and value pages has tremendously increased conversions.
I just take some of my best reviews from GMB and sprinkle them throughout my main pages.
17. Try To Add One Image Per Main Page
I try to add one relevant image per page.
This seems to reduce bounce rates and improve rankings.
18. Push Relevant Content Via Blog
Although I know some don’t believe blogging helps when increasing rankings locally, I beg to differ.
I actually have worked on a site that was ranking on the second page after doing tons of SEO and shortly after they started blogging, we hit number 1 within about a month.
I’m not saying buy low quality content off fiver (which I have done and have got some positive results) but actually get 500-1000 word quality articles written so you can start funneling people to a controllable asset as discussed in tip 1.
19. Utilize Paid Channels
Assuming you set up some funnels for your business, it would be wise to start targeting paid channels such as Adwords or Facebook, especially if there is a low CPC (Cost per click).
